Have you ever wanted to spend a night at New York’s premier art space, with the luxury of a personal tour guide? Do you know the difference between Modern and Contemporary Art? How are hedge funds intricately connected with the art world? On the 28th September, a special art tour and drinks reception took place at the MoMA Museum for New York’s quantitative hedge fund community. This exclusive event was sponsored by Hentsū and hosted by Bartt Kellermann from Battle of the Quants. Bartt acted as tour guide for the evening, knowledgeably sharing his collection of extraordinary facts as he wended his way through the museum’s most iconic artworks.
Hedge Fund Connection
Hedge funds have long played an active role in financial markets and are now developing a track record of taking creative financial positions in art. Whether it involves bidding up the prices of undervalued artists or offloading positions in overvalued artists, there’s no doubt that hedge fund investors have begun to disrupt a traditionally genteel market with their aggressive approach.
Hot-shot art collector Steve Cohen’s trades are among some of the most closely followed – at over $1B in value and featuring the likes of Picasso, Gaugin and Van Gogh, his collection represents a portfolio of truly “alternative investments”.
The CIA and Art?
Needless to say guests enjoyed this dose of midweek culture. Overheard over drinks, one guest delightedly stated: “I found the ‘Jackson Pollock’ conspiracy curious. Who knew he was used by the then CIA to bolster American Culture vis-à-vis the Soviet Union? Great stuff!”.
