Azure Customer Reference

Hentsu has recently achieved another significant customer reference in Azure. We were tasked by a major large hedge fund to deploy their large infrastructure, consisting of all of their trading, data and corporate services, into Azure US and UK. Not only was this accomplished with minimum hiccups, it also successfully marks one of the largest and unique migrations we have ever undertaken. Over the last few years, we have steadily increased our Azure partner capabilities and the number of client deployments. This latest successful customer reference is another milestone in our growth and transition from start-up, to a company now almost in its second year.

Multi-cloud solution

Over time, Hentsu have completed a number of small and large Azure deployments. In fact, with any deployment onto a cloud-based platform, like AWS, we always advocate a backup of last resort on Azure and vice versa. Not only does this ensure that there is no vendor dependency, it also guarantees compliance with the regulatory requirements of asset managers. Backing up our deployments onto multiple clouds gives our clients reassurance that their private and valuable data is always readily available, even in the unlikely event something should go wrong. In fact, knowing they can rely on cloud platforms, some of our larger clients have even chosen to run entirely on cloud platforms, including all their research, trading and execution, and desktops.

Features Across Multiple Clouds

We are strong advocates of using different cloud providers. However, competitive features from different clouds are usually not able to run alongside each other. The features are similar but not the same, which often means that there is the risk that the solution could end up using the lowest common denominator between multiple clouds. This means losing a lot of the native features and benefits of individual clouds in the process. There is a need to balance features and capabilities which are available across the different cloud providers with complexities of larger deployments.

We use abstraction layers in order to make the multiple cloud deployments run as smoothly and efficiently as possible. We use our own deeply embedded automation and Terraform from Hashicorp in order to leverage the native efficiencies of the clouds as much as we can, keeping our deployment code simple and easily managed.

Azure for Hedge Funds

Hentsu has been one of the first partners to deploy an Azure WAN topology across US & EU, utilising Azure ExpressRoute Premium meshed with internet links. This unique network topology provides failover and redundancy not only between two Azure regions, but also the increased bandwidth and multiple routes to the Internet over direct fibre links through Azure utilising ExpressRoute and local ISP connections.

Azure ExpressRoute Premium WAN deployed by Hentsu Some of the benefits of deploying onto Azure include the usual cloud OPEX flexibility and cost efficiencies. Azure also uniquely offers Office 365 integration, as well as identity management with Azure Active Directory. Additionally, it has the benefit of productivity suite packages, that are now utilised universally in offices all over the world. This is also an added plus side for customers who have already bought software licenses from Microsoft, and are then able to utilise the same licenses for Azure. However, Microsoft also offer services that go beyond their productivity suite. They have spent significant amount of capital and time investing in diversifying the technologies they offer.

In addition to their cloud platform services and Microsoft Exchange servers, they also offer machine learning services, like their cognitive and data-processing services, and data-analysing services. Another of their recently unveiled platforms is the Time Series Insights, which allows users to stream real time data to it, like stock prices for example, storing them in a 30-day buffer during which analytics can be conducted. This is just one of the many services that Azure offer that aren’t as well known as Office 365. Azure’s flexibly and cost efficiency allows users to experiment with their products with no financial commitments, ensuring clients are only buying and using what works best for them.

Hentsū had the pleasure of joining the Google Cloud Summit on Tuesday in New York. Leaders and partners in the industry gathered to discuss the challenges in doing business that funds face today and how cloud-based solutions helped by applying technologies such as AI and Machine Learning across G-Suite, in order to boost productivity and efficiency. This includes intelligent search functions, applications such as “app maker” that shorten development time, and tools to process big data at lightning speeds which ultimately enhance the research being conducted. Hentsū’s role in this is multi-faceted. Firstly, we provide expertise within the hedge fund space. Furthermore, as an active Google partner, we help managers reap the benefits of this powerful cloud platform while mitigating risk and cutting costs. We do so by both deploying and fully managing a fund’s migration to a cloud-based environment.

Challenges

The Summit discussed how some of the challenges faced by funds looking to migrate to a cloud-based environment in-house are around legacy systems. These systems have been in production for years, and as such, migrating sensitive and proprietary transactional data requires careful handling and of course, security.  The first-hand experience in the hedge fund space that Hentsū possess, allows us to understand these challenges inside and out. Our focus is concentrated on helping funds deploy and manage these solutions in the most efficient and secure way.

Benefits of a Cloud Expert

As we’ve previously noted, even Amazon and Google both agree that everything fails, but by building security and resiliency into the bones of the technology’s infrastructure, you can mitigate losses while also ensuring you remain compliant with the ever-changing regulatory landscape. According to IDC, by 2018, 65% of finance firms will be in the cloud. These trends are causing funds to make big decisions around what technology they choose to manage in-house, and what they find valuable to outsource to a vendor who is an expert in the end-to-end process. Knowing that the whole process, starting from the actual technology migration, all the way to the compliance and security that surrounds it, is in trusted and capable hands, is spurning more and more funds to bite the bullet and entrust experts with their legacies. Additional information on Google Cloud Platform Security can help funds understand Google’s standards around privacy, safety and compliance and can be found here. We would love to hear about the challenges your business faces around deployments and migrations to the cloud and where we can help: hello@hentsu.com

Defining a Start-up

Free beers, nap pods, table tennis and office dogs… The office life of a start-up doesn’t sound all that bad, but the reality is, being a start-up means so much more than flashy perks, funky offices, and a relaxed dressed code. While there definitely is a sense of joviality and flexibility to start-ups, it would be wrong to assume that’s all they have to offer. The term has become a buzzword over the last few years, but what does being a start-up really mean? For us here at Hentsū, being a start-up means the chance to clearly define long-term goals, ambitions and aspirations from the get go. It’s also an opportunity to create a culture to develop alongside our business, and to take the time to invest in our employees. It’s a chance to be innovative, to think outside the box, and redefine the way we work. To us, all this is as much a part of being a start-up as the pool tables and free beer.

Building Team Spirit

Being a start-up has meant we’re able to bend the rules of traditional office spaces, and create teams across multiple locations that come together as one thanks to technology. Our US, UK and New Zealand offices are set up with large monitors equipped with web cams, through which we set up a video call daily on Gruveo. It’s an easy, fast and secure way to make an instant video call that doesn’t require an account or installation. An instant video connection that can last as long as required is easily set up by simply typing in a previously agreed ‘room’ name. This way, the  offices, time difference permitting, work along-side each other during the day by connecting through the same virtual ‘room’. In a sense, it's like our very own transcontinental office portal, a veritable gateway across oceans far and wide. Not only does this 'office portal' allow for instant face-to-face communication, it also gives our offices a sense of collaboration and encourages team-building across the multiple locations.  The Hentsū office portal  adds a dimension of fun and liveliness to staying connected and the overall office environment.  It also helps create the sense of a single office space, that transcends geographical locations and time-zones, where all teams are always up-to-date on what the other is doing, building interest in each other’s projects and minimising internal divisions. Connecting and building one cohesive team, even with oceans in-between, also helps to install a real sense of pride in the work we accomplish for our clients. While there is nothing wrong with traditional office spaces, it simply would not suit our needs, nor would it reflect who we are as a company. As we expand in the number of employees and scale of work, our virtual office space can expand with us, keeping the sense of cohesiveness between our multiple locations. Our portal is also the one space that doesn’t see the sun ‘set’. As one office shuts for the day, another is logging on, ready to pick up where the other left off. This wouldn’t be possible without a little bit of creative thinking and a touch of ambition.

Living Our Values

Another positive aspect of being a start-up has been the possibility to clearly define our values from inception and develop our culture based on the goals we set for ourselves. We wouldn’t be true to ourselves or the culture we want to create if we didn’t integrate our values into our everyday office lives. Thinking outside the box and using technology to bring our teams together across various locations is so important to us because it sets the precedent for the way our company grows. Hentsū not only puts technology, innovation, efficiency, and security at the forefront of what we deliver to our clients, we also value them as intrinsic to our day-to-day lives. We are not only using technology to change the way our clients work, we’re also using it to change how we work and accomplish our goals.  We believe that as a start-up, it is important to invest in developing our values and culture, because it’s investing in our teams, and therefore, the overall growth of our company.

Solid Foundations

While start-ups may indicate new beginnings, they don’t necessarily equate inexperience. What may be the start of something new to some, is simply the next stage of a career for others. A solid foundation bears stability, durability, and trust in the long term. Setting up a business may sound straight forward and easy, but being able to steer the company in a successful direction for both the employees and clients requires experience and know-how. Our Directors each have over a decade worth of experience and careers in their respective fields. Since its foundation nearly two years ago, Hentsu has expanded and grown substantially in size thanks to the leadership skills and experience across our team.

What Next?

As Hentsū grows and expands we will seek new ways to maintain the cohesive feel across our teams.  Our offices have expanded rapidly, with new additions joining our teams every month since the New Year. Coming up with new ways to build team-spirit and develop as a company is part of the growing process of a start-up. As we grow, we will carry on integrating our core values of efficiency, security, reliability and innovation into our everyday lives… enjoying the occasional free beer and game of table tennis along the way.

Hentsū is committed to helping charities on an on-going basis, and will proudly support the good work and effort done by charities across both the US and UK. Philanthropy is an integral part to Hentsū’s growth and the positive culture we seek to develop across our offices. Earlier this month, Hentsū was honoured to have be one of the sponsors of the 5th Annual AITEC Charity Golf Event, hosted by the ‘AITEC Gives Back Foundation’, a non-profit organisation founded by the AITEC board, one of the largest peer groups in the financial vertical for technology, finance, operational, risk and compliance executives. The Hentsū US team were happy to show their support for the event, which raised over $430,000 USD for charities across the country. Overall, the foundation has raised $1.2 million USD since their inception in 2013, with donations going towards several charities in the US.  The proceeds raised by the event go towards the Catch-A-Lift Foundation, the Army Ranger Lead the Way Fund, and the LZ Grace Foundation, who help provide mental and physical rehabilitation as well as care and support to struggling veterans and their families. Donations will also go to the Ground Work Hudson Valley, who subsidize development projects for young people and teach environmental sustainability to the communities of the lower Hudson Valley, providing positive change to neglected and distressed communities. The Hentsū US office was proud to support the AITEC Gives Back Foundation, which backs these hard-working charities that are lending a helping hand to the most deserving and vulnerable in the country. Contributing towards building communities and bettering the lives of those in need is as important to us as the technology we help build.  Both our US and UK teams hope to continue showing their support for causes that enrich the lives of the communities that surround us. Our aim is to positively impact the everyday lives of those who deserve a helping hand through our philanthropic endeavours, in the hopes of leaving a mark on society that goes beyond technological innovations.
